Joe Kocherhans hangs up his mic at radio KSDS FM a day before his 70th birthday
After 41 years as the voice of Jazz 88.3 morning wake-up music, drive-time show host Joe Kocherhans will miss being on the airwaves. But he won’t miss going to bed at 7 p.m. and waking up each weekday at 4 a.m.birthday.
He was an intern in 1973 when the station shifted to its all-jazz format — a genre for which it has gained national acclaim. Surprisingly, if you were to survey the CDs, albums and artists memorabilia at Kochehans’ home in Birdland, a seven-minute drive from the station, you would be hard-pressed to guess his favorite genre.
While partial to the music he grew up with in the ‘60s and ‘70s — including Chicago, the Doobie Brothers, Santana and Steely Dan — it was the Beatles who truly got him hooked in seventh grade. Of the many jazz musicians Kocherhans has interviewed over the years, guitarist Pat Metheny is one of his favorites. When their conversation turned to songwriter Jimmy Webb, Metheny told the DJ, “Every song I write is a variation on ‘Wichita Lineman.’”
