The Padres are digging a hole so deep, they’ve discovered Jimmy Hoffa and Judge Crater, the lost mines of King Solomon, and now find themselves but a few shovelfuls shy of coming up just outside the Great Wall.When I look at this baseball team, I see stars. No standing-eight. It knocks me out. Just when I thought I’d seen every possible punch and somehow managed to go the distance.
But give me one good reason — a half of one — why we should believe this billion-dollar yacht’s defective rudder is capable of turning it around — or if this supposedly high-powered engine can get it off the beach before the rogue wave of ineptitude puts it to sleep with the fishes.If you’re a believer in beauty being only skin-deep, then this team is for you. Natalie Wood on the outside, Medusa on the inside.
Trying too hard? Not trying hard enough? I have read hundreds of mysteries, including most of the great, venomous female British authors — Christie, Sayers, you name them — and they couldn’t come up with a satisfying denouement. Granted, things happen in ball that cannot be explained. Probably every day. But I’ve followed baseball since Truman was in office, and I’ve seen even great hitters slump, but nothing close to being this cumulative, for so long.
