Goal by England's Jodie Taylor caps team effort for Casey Stoney's team
The expansion San Diego Wave weathered Houston heat Sunday night and earned a 1-0 road victory in their regular-season debut in the world’s top women’s soccer league .
“I’m extremely proud of this team and how far it has come,” said coach Stoney Casey, who commended her players for handling “heat that we’re not used to” and allowing no goals. It was the Wave’s first shutout, including a preseason that saw opponents score 11 goals in six matches. The scoring sequence began with Austrialian midfielder Emily van Egmond pasing to Gyau, and the Duke alum sending the ball to USC alum Johnson.
