Halimi, whose father was killed by the Taliban when he was a child, settled in Perth while Ms Haidari moved to Shepparton, a rural town about 200 kilometres north-east of Melbourne. The agency said they offered assistance on several occasions but ultimately Ms Haidari was forced to marry Halimi in exchange for a payment of $15,000.
Relatives of Ms Haidari were arrested by AFP officers in Victoria in 2020 over allegations they forced her into a marriage against her will.He said the murder was “brutal and senseless” and did not question Halimi’s intention to kill Ms Haidari. But he said the 25-year-old, who suffered from serious mental health issues, struggled to cope as a result of the trauma he had suffered in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
