While the creators and cast have recently expressed misgivings about using the New York Police Department as the backdrop to a sitcom, this half-hour comedy headlined by Andy Samberg is beloved by fans for its whimsical wit, diverse ensemble cast and deceptive development of the characters. With a new season in production, it’s the definitive example of how a contemporary sitcom can be both ludicrous and empathetic. That’s a hugely reassuring combination.
One of the most influential shows in the history of television – it redefined the parameters of genre works and launched creator Joss Whedon, who subsequently set the tone for Marvel movies – is now a binge-worthy hit 17 years after it finished. Sarah Michelle Gellar’s teenage slayer, a chosen one vanquishing supernatural evil, is an iconic figure, with the passing of time allowing the original coming-of-age subtext to be foregrounded.
The latest example of the aforementioned Netflix bump is this chilling horror series – cancelled in 2015 – that lived in the bloody beginnings of, where the monstrous Dr Hannibal Lecter is a leading psychiatrist advising FBI profiler Will Graham on a creepy collection of cases. The show is notable for its striking visual compositions and not – I repeat not – the subset of fans turned on by Mikkelsen’s immaculate European psycho killer.
The definitive 1990s sitcom may have been lauded as a show about nothing, but Netflix recently paid approximately $710 million to secure five years of global streaming rights for Seinfeld starting from next year. Discovering a famous episode feels like a treat for repeat viewers, and the nostalgic rhythms are calmly reassuring – the only Nazi the characters onFrom left: Tony Sirico, James Gandolfini and Steven Van Zandt in The Sopranos.Not every comfort viewing staple is a comedy.
