The New South Wales government says the artwork infamous murderer Leonard Lawson did on the old walls of Grafton Gaol must go before the site becomes part of a new hospital because it could be upsetting for staff.
Prison guards were criticised for letting Leonard Lawson off-site to view a tree.New South Wales Health intends to cover up murals painted by convicted murderer and rapist Leonard Lawson on the walls of the old Grafton Gaol.
The jail was closed in 2020 and the site is being repurposed by the local Aboriginal land council and New South Wales Health, with plans for old jail buildings to become an administrative hub while the Grafton Hospital is being redeveloped nearby. But the Clarence River Historical Society said it was against the move and the artworks should be preserved as a valuable part of history. The large murals were commissioned by prison guards during Lawson's lengthy incarceration.
"That's how he got out the first time — people were saying 'how did he get out?' and it's because he presented himself as a model prisoner," Mr Best said.
