Watchmen creator Alan Moore's new novel blends magic with history in a 'delirious' ride through an alternate-reality London.
Alan Moore made a decision on a whim 31 years ago to become a magician, and he hasn't looked back.This is how Alan Moore , the acclaimed English author, recounts the night of his 40th birthday, some 31-odd years ago, when, after "quite a few beers", he declared to everyone present that he would become a practising ceremonial magician.
He would either devote the rest of his life "to something which may not even be real, or like an idiot.""I decided that I'd devote the rest of my life to something that may not even be real," he tells ABC Radio National'sAlan Moore is best known for his trailblazing work in comic books, such as V for Vandetta, From Hell, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, and his magnum opus, The Watchmen.
By way of example, Moore says he read Mervyn Peake's Gormenghast trilogy back when he was 13 or 14, but the world of those books has stayed with him to this day. In order to make a fictional world feel this real, Moore believes a writer must fully inhabit this world of their creation and make it real in their own mind first and foremost.It's the notion of a shared imagination. And Moore shares with us a delirious, fever-dream version of London inhabited by impossible characters, and where our protagonist is attacked by rubbish and objects come to life.
