It was only this fall, while interviewing with this newspaper, that I was once again able to walk through the courtyard at the Alamo as I had done before on countless field trips for school and with family. It feels great to be home in San Antonio.After more than two decades, I returned to San Antonio, my childhood stomping grounds.
More than 22 years ago, my dad’s job at Valero brought the Murphy family of four to California, and now it’s my job with the Express-News that has brought me back. At the end of October my brother and I loaded up my little blue truck, including a trunk once owned by my great-grandmother, and traveled from California to Texas.
This city has grown; more than 1 million people have moved to San Antonio since 2000, but some things have stayed the same. Some of those things that still make this place feel like home: Spurs games, Chester’s Hamburgers, not being 2 feet away from someone wearing James Avery, brisket, the giant boots at North Star Mall and Blue Bell ice cream.
