The process to change the name of John A. Macdonald Road to miyo-wâhkôhtowin Road continues.
The meeting was paused briefly when another resident who previously addressed the committee was removed from chambers after an outburst in which she demanded more input on the new name.
In his remarks before the vote, Mayor Charlie Clark said one of his goals was to have children growing up in Saskatoon “see themselves reflected in the community,” and noted Cree, Saulteaux, Dene and Michif were all spoken here before Europeans arrived. He said it became clear during door-knocking sessions that residents of the road held a wide array of views on renaming the street, reconciliation and the legacy of residential schools. Clark said this made it a matter of balancing resident input with avoiding a process where elders and survivors might have to “relitigate” the harms caused by residential schools.the road in 2021.
