. It is a far cry from the outrage which followed Cathy Freeman’s victory lap with the Aboriginal flag in Canada in 1994.
Organisers made a conscious decision that Birmingham would be the first major multi-sport event in history to have more women’s medal events than men’s. It is also the largest para sports program in the Games’ history, with eight sports being held and events such as swimming and athletics interspersed with able-bodied events.
“That gives people much more scope to sit down and think through what is really important for their country in terms of sports but also economic development, trade, tourism and all those kinds of things.” “That in its own right, I think, will kickstart development,” he said. “You’ll see more social and affordable housing after these games with what we’re building.”
