Kyle Chalmers has won the men's 100m freestyle, adding to Australian golds in cycling, gymnastics and lawn bowls. Follow all the action
He is the Commonwealth champion after claiming gold in the men’s 100m freestyle final. That one must feel pretty special for a man who admitted he wanted to be on the first plane out of Birmingham.
“It is special to win but unfortunately I think it is hard to enjoy the moment when all that has happened has gone on. It makes it a challenging time,” Chalmers said on Seven. “I am grateful that I was able to block it out enough to stand up and winter night. I hope this is a learning point for everybody. And I hope nobody else has to go through what I have gone through.
“For me, that night that it all happened after the relay, I got to Facetime my brother which meant the world to me. Today, my mum messaged me saying that the army would let my brother watch the race. For me, that is all the motivation that I need to know that my brother, my best mate, is watching my race. I do it for him every time I go down to take my marks, I have got my brother’s name written on my foot. The last thought that goes through my brain before a race every time.
“I appreciate all the support that I have had. I would not have been able to get through it, yesterday there were points where I thought I would not continue on. That just lets the media win. For me, I had to stand up and do it, not for myself but for everybody at home, everybody going through similar things, I hope I can inspire and I will continue this conversation.”Now he’s about to dive in the pool for a shot at another gold medal, this time in the men’s 100m freestyle final.
