Authorities are still working to determine what led up the shooting. Parents are understandably worried about their kids' safety.
EAST ORANGE, New Jersey --
Community activists throughout the region came together to the exact spot where a gunman shot the 16-year-old basketball standout dead as he walked home from school.at the corner of Lincoln Street and Park Avenue when gunfire erupted in a residential area near several schools.He was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead.Pamela Courten is Duncan's grandmother. Alrick Courten is his uncle.
"We need our children to feel safe traveling throughout our city. Anything else is unacceptable. I've been tough on crime since day one and I will remain that way - investing in more police officers and getting illegal guns off the street. But we also are investing in positive opportunities for our young people to mitigate the systemic pressures and disparities that put our youth at risk.
"So it's hard. It's difficult," she told Eyewitness News. "I'm having a hard time this morning. It's very sad for that family and I'm praying for them."
