This campaign has the two major parties trying to disprove that accepted wisdom, and they’re doing so with more than just a feeling.
The opposition is pledging to trump the Coalition by $5.1 billion over six years, or about 3.7 per cent. It’s not as stark a difference as many voters might imagine. Rather than comparing apples and oranges, Labor now just has a slightly bigger granny smith. The government has other achievements to point to.
. It adds up to about $387 billion in extra tax revenue over a decade, a figure disputed by Labor but, tellingly, without offering an alternative. It is a lot of money and the Coalition is hammering it as a risk to economic growth.
