Treasurer Jim Chalmers is launching a deep-dive into competition laws over concerns corporate giants are misusing market power.
Rules making it harder for large companies to buy smaller competitors will be considered as part of a broad review of competition laws announced by Treasurer Jim Chalmers.
Key issues will include a suite of proposals urged by ACCC chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb earlier this year to clamp down on mergers and acquisitions, and look at how non-compete clauses suppress job-switching. “The Albanese government is focused on tackling cost of living pressures now and laying the foundations for future growth – and making our economy more competitive is critical to both of these goals.
The changes were a watered-down version of measures suggested by her predecessor Rod Sims and rejected by the Morrison government in 2021.
