Two-thirds of NSW police stations had an excessive number of complaints made against officers last year, with one western Sydney area receiving nearly one complaint for every three officers
.
Other areas with high rates of complaint in this category include Lake Illawarra, at 22 complaints per 100 officers, Monaro at 21, and the Hills, the Blue Mountains, Camden and Cumberland at 19.The lowest rates of complaint were in Tweed/Byron, at 2.4 complaints for every 100 officers, and Central North and Leichhardt at four complaints per 100 officers.
Professor Lee said far higher rates of complaint in some areas could be linked to specific policing strategies being employed in those regions, what was being targeted, police resourcing and other factors that influenced how likely people were to come into contact with police. More than 2200 allegations were made by the community and other officers against NSW police officers last year.About 2260 of the allegations were related to service and ethical standards, 2200 were about customer service, 1600 were related to investigations, 923 were about police powers, 900 were on the use of force and 76 were about sexual misconduct, NSW police figures show.
Ms Lee said police handling of complaints was also an issue and that those lodged by the centre for its clients are often "dismissed and not substantiated, without sufficient transparency or reasoning".
