“For me, whether it’s an earring or an entire room, it’s always about stripping back to the elements so that only what truly matters remains.”
While Damluji focused on the interior structure, reconfiguring the ground floor by shifting the stairwell and the now light-filled stainless-steel kitchen, Jewsbury turned her attention to the mood of each room and the objects that would best conjure it. Cleverly, the couple lived in the space – carpets and all – for a time, fully familiarising themselves before embarking on any work. The result is a deliberately, deeply personal home.
For Jewsbury, interior decoration is simply another mode of transmitting her artistic vision. “I wanted this space to be a true expression of me,” she says, “so that someone could walk into our home and see my personality on display at every turn.” With a taste for the clean-lined, the raw and the sculptural, that sense of character translates into an interior that’s minimally adorned and sparsely elegant.
This complex notion of beauty comes to fruition most fully in the living room, which has the rarefied air of a gallery. Encased in Bauwerk lime-wash paint, which lends a naturalistic and understated feel, the room is grounded by original columns and oak-panel floors, which offset a series of painted plinths sourced from an art gallery. On the wall hangs a giant, gorgeous canvas depicting the expressive visages of the young Irish artist Sian Costello’s friends.
