Shredded rags, dirty plush toys and cheap pillows are just some of the bizarre items Australians are being sent in the mail as part of a scam growing in popularity.
resident Scott, who asked for his surname to be withheld, said he was left feeling puzzled and uneasy after receiving a package with a pillow he never ordered on Monday.that it was for one of several deliveries he was expecting.Rages, pillows and plush toys appear to be common items sent out by dodgy overseas sellers involved in brushing scams. "When I opened it …. I was completely baffled," Scott said.
Things started to get interesting, Scott said, when he Googled the address the parcel had been sent from, a PO Box in the suburb of Dingley Village, in Melbourne's south-east. "I was concerned there might be some biochemical hazard so I gloved up and disposed of the package immediately." The sellers then post reviews, purportedly from the recipient, in a bid to boost their retail profile.Australia cybersecurity expert Simon Smith told 9news.com.au earlier this year that brushing was most commonly used by sellers on online marketplace sites such as Amazon and eBay.The sellers, pretending to be the customer, then write a glowing review for their product.
"Australia Post has received reports of customers receiving unexpected items from overseas senders," an Australia Post spokesperson said.
