'Completely disgusted': Moira Deeming opens up on 'shocking' preselection fight which saw Liberals back away from candidate linked to sex offender Moira Deeming has opened up over the"shocking" preselection fight she endured before successfully winning the right to recontest Victoria 's Western Metropolitan region.
Moira Deeming has revealed she felt"completely disgusted" after she initially lost a Liberal preselection bid to a candidate who provided a character reference to a child sex offender. Ms Deeming had initially appeared set to miss out on preselection after she lost a ballot to Dinesh Gourisetty for the opportunity to contest the Western Metropolitan region. However, Mr Gourisetty was dumped after it emerged he had provided a character reference for a convicted child sex offender. Ms Deeming has revealed she felt"completely disgusted" after she initially lost her Liberal preselection bid. Picture: NewsWire/Andrew Henshaw Speaking to Sky News after she successfully secured the Liberal candidacy, Ms Deeming expressed her disbelief at the process. "To be brutally honest with you, I was completely disgusted and I was absolutely demoralised. I couldn't believe that that had happened," she told Senior Reporter Caroline Marcus. After being exiled from the Victorian Liberals due, in part, to a defamation battle with former leader John Pesutto, Ms Deeming revealed she had not expected to emerge victorious from the preselection contest, but had committed to it in order to repay those who stood behind her during her fight with the party.Ms Deeming was exiled from the Victorian Liberals due, in part, to a defamation battle with former leader John Pesutto. Picture: NewsWire/Diego Fedele "I had obviously seen the numbers and the people in the room, but I decided to go through that preselection battle because I had asked people to stay and stick with the party all throughout my trial and they stuck in for me. "I thought: 'Well, I need to do the honourable thing and go all the way through to the end for them' and I had accepted that result." However, Ms Deeming said the contest had been managed in the"very worst possible way" and suggested it had damaged the party, as well as serving to distract from the more important task of preparing for the next state election.Key to Ms Deeming's re-integration was an endorsement from Victorian Liberal leader Jess Wilson and the MP explained she was encouraged by the change in leadership as the party attempts to win back power in the state. "I think Jess understands that all of these internal fights, if they have to be had, they cannot be played out in public," she said. "They cannot distract us from our goal, from our real purpose, which is to actually serve the people of Victoria. "They have been suffering, they have been betrayed as a whole entire class of people by their own party and they're looking for an alternative and we need them to look at us and that's only gonna happen if we're worthy.
