Structural engineers claim building regulators have been slow to act, as new construction technology has allowed buildings to bend with the wind but wall and ceiling framing designs have not kept up. | CharlotteGriev1

The new designs save developers money by requiring fewer materials, Dr Menegon said, but this has put residents at a disadvantage and regulators have been slow to act.“There’s probably a bit of an imbalance between what the consumer wants versus the developer who is making the decisions,” he said. “Typically things aren’t an issue until we see something go wrong and it ends up in the newspapers.

Mr Bartlett said “this is a complex, wicked problem” and called for a national review of building products to ensure industry standards are being met, adding regulators have been missing in action. “Prior to this being released, I don’t think there’s really any options on the market today,” Dr Menegon said. “It will fix the problem”

“And when the engineer says you’ve tested the firewall, you’ve tested it for fire resistance but not for the movement.”“We have used new building systems designed specifically to deal with movement. There is no issue with the structural or fire integrity of the building and residents are safe in their homes. They should not be made to feel otherwise.”
