The systemic barriers that caused some communities to become coronavirus hotspots have persisted. covid19 vaccines boosters
Many thousands of people living in areas hit hardest by coronavirus infections are yet to get their booster shot, with health experts warning mixed messaging about the third dose and poor access to vaccine sites pose significant barriers to lifting the Victoria’s vaccination rate.
In Melton, to Melbourne’s west, 45 per cent of people have not had their booster shot, while 44 per cent in Casey, in the city’s south-east, are yet to get their third jab. These areas face a higher infection rate compared with many inner-city municipalities, in part due to a lack of access to mainstream health services and translated resources, doctors say, while many residents work as essential workers.
“I don’t think we will hit the numbers that we did with the first and second doses because there’s just that fatigue; the prolonged messaging over vaccinations and mandates, which have led to a bit of negative feeling in some parts of the population, all make it very difficult.” Many pop-up vaccination clinics have closed, and a return to online booking systems excludes sections of the community, she said.
