ANGELIQUE DONNELLAN, REPORTER: Twenty-five-year-old Hayley Piel comes from a proud family of Whyalla steelmakers. She counts one man in particular as her inspiration.

ANGELIQUE DONNELLAN: Steel production finally resumed last week but the months’ long outage has cost millions prompting the state government to undertake contingency planning should the plant become insolvent. SHANE KARGER: There were decisions made by the company to vary the output of the furnace to try and reduce the amount of loss-making steel that was being made. Unfortunately, that plan didn't obviously work out how they wanted it to.PETER MALINAUSKAS: Challenged.PETER MALINAUSKAS: Not really. I mean, that's for GFG to speak to. This is a privately run company, but clearly, they're challenged.

I've met Mr Gupta, and he oozes enthusiasm and optimism. In that sense he's a great salesperson but I think the results in Whyalla speak for itself. The UK’s Serious Fraud Office is investigating the Gupta Family Group Alliance over suspicions of fraud, fraudulent trading and money laundering.PETER MALINAUSKAS: Well, I think it's a very significant investigation, and again, that is something that we pay close attention to.

But the magnate’s previous lofty yet unfulfilled promises of local investment have led to scepticism.PETER MALINAUSKAS: Look, only the steelworks, brings with it a degree of attention, because it's such an important asset for the country. He has made a number of promises to the local community and, I guess industry as a whole.
