African swine flu could wipe out 350 million pigs in China alone - with Australian Pork CEO Margo Andrae telling Sky News the illness could eradicate out 25 per cent of the world’s protein sources. “The estimates are, by the time it goes through China, there will be about 350 million pigs dead,” Ms Andrae said.

“It doesn’t have a vaccine and within a week to two weeks the pigs that get the virus die - it’s an animal welfare issue. “It is safe to eat pork [as the disease] doesn’t impact humans, but from an animal welfare perspective it is destroying the global pig herd.” Half the world's pigs are from China and more than 100 million have been killed as a result of the epidemic.
