An extra 220,000 Australians could be on Work for the Dole programs by mid-2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic, according to a new report.
Rising unemployment in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic could force hundreds of thousands more people onto the Work for the Dole program, costing the taxpayer hundreds of millions of dollars in extra costs, according to a new report.
People in the scheme must attend the activities or risk having their welfare payments cancelled under the Federal Government's mutual obligations requirements, which are being reintroduced after being suspended in March. The Australian Unemployed Workers Union's vice-president Owen Bennett said the union was concerned WFTD sites were unsafe.
There are predictions Australia's welfare system could face an extra $300 million in costs to support people out of work.
