Emmanuel Macron said 'It's a small revolution for contraception' in a Twitter video announcing the move
Emmanuel Macron announced on Friday that condoms can now be accessed for free in pharmacies by people under the age of 25. The French President said "It's a small revolution for contraception" in a Twitter video announcing the move, which comes with the aim of reducing unwanted pregnancies among the younger population.
The government plans to begin offering free birth control for women under the age of 25 in the new year, with hopes of ensuring young people do not stop taking contraception because of the cost. If prescribed by a doctor or a midwife, condoms are already reimbursed by France's national health system with the aim of preventing sexually transmitted diseases, which the health authorities have observed a significant increase in over recent years.
Macron, who had previously only announced the move for 18-25-year-olds on Thursday before extending to under 18's a day later, said on sexual education: "We are not very good on this subject. The reality is very, very different from the theory. It's an area where we need to much better educate our teachers.
