Confusing: Are you ‘embracing ageing’ at 50 if still you look 35? | sarzberry
“I accept my body and let go of the need to be perfect, look perfect, defy gravity, defy logic, defy humanity.”
“So, some would say, the only way to stay ‘visible’ and ‘relevant’ in society is to engage with the myriad of age ‘defying’ products and procedures. You are allowed to say that you are 50 years old, but as long as you do not look it.”Dr Zali Yager, executive director of the Body Confident Collective, echoes the sentiment.
“For young women, it’s setting impossibly high expectations,” Yager says. “And then for women who are in their forties and fifties who then look at the image and just think, ‘well, I don’t look like that, and I’m in that age bracket’, I think it’s potentially more damaging.” “I was incredibly insecure and anxious about how I looked and I was covering my face with makeup. And I look at myself in the mirror now, and obviously, I look 61, but I feel really good about being 61.”“If you feel confident in yourself, then you don’t need to externalise that. The analogy I’d give is do you need a big car to look important?”
