Those neighborhoods each developed independently of the downtown core. King William took land from the original Mission de San Antonio de Valero following the arrival en masse of German immigrants, but those immigrants made King William feel distinct from the neighborhoods surrounding it. The in-lying suburb went from an outlying town to a central hub for luxury real estate after Thurman developed the land for use as a high-end suburb. In 1939, the town was engulfed by the city and subsequently incorporated.
"Walking these neighborhoods, the ways in which landscapes are cut up and parceled out, angled streets aren’t great," Miller said."They lead to triangles, which you need to do something with." For much of San Antonio's history, including the period when the city was heavily influenced by the many street cars operating within it, the city's streets were very narrow and wandered around its many river bends and hills. For an example, look to St. Mary's Street, which"goes where it wants to," Miller said. This is especially the case for north-south-running streets in San Antonio, contributing to San Antonio's"partially-built-out grid.
