More than seven-in-ten evangelical Christians want significant immigration reforms this year.
Our immigration systems are in crisis – and Pennsylvanians are struggling as a result.
As a Christian, I view these concerns through the lens of my religious faith. Scriptures speak repeatedly and clearly to God’s love and concern for vulnerable foreigners, who are mentioned repeatedly alongside orphans and widows as people whom God commands his people to love and protect. As we prepare to celebrate Christmas, we should also remember that Jesus himself was an immigrant. Not long after being born to parents unable to find lodging while far from their home, the Holy Family crossed a border fleeing King Herod’s threatened persecution, carrying young Jesus with them. Today we’d categorize our Savior as both a refugee and a Dreamer. The Christian university community that I have the privilege to lead has students and alumni whose future is on the line.
Similarly, Afghans are stuck with only temporary legal protections that, for most, expire next year. While we can hope their documents will be renewed, it’s understandable that these American allies, for whom deportation to Afghanistan could mean death, feel insecure without permanent legal status. Resettled refugees are generally granted permanent status one year after arrival, but because of the unique nature of the rushed evacuation from Kabul, most Afghans are not technically refugees.
