The California governor said he will not appoint someone already running to replace the late senator in 2024 ― and that includes the progressive Black lawmaker.

The Congressional Black Caucus is urging California Gov. Gavin Newsom to appoint Rep. Barbara Lee to the late Sen.

“She is the only person with the courage, the vision, and the record to eradicate poverty, face down the fossil fuel industry, defend our democracy, and tirelessly advance the progressive agenda,” writes Chairman Steven Horsford in urging Governor Newsom to appoint Barbara Lee.Newsom has not publicly responded to the CBC’s letter, but he has reaffirmed a pledge he made in 2021to fill any future Senate vacancies in California.
