Improvements to Healy Spur Road will improve the communities access to important locations and the longevity of the road.
FAIRBANKS, Alaska - South of Fairbanks, the Department of Transportation is working to rehabilitate Healy Spur Road in an effort to improve access for pedestrians and longevity.
The DOT is working to widen both the road itself and the shoulders of the road, “which is really going to accommodate a lot of the increased pedestrian traffic that the community has seen through out the years as it’s grown to support the tourism industry,” said Kaitlin Williams, a publication specialist with DOT.
Along with the widening of the road and shoulders, the DOT is improving longevity of the surface by increasing the strength and depth of the road base. In addition to the thinker base, the layer of asphalt that vehicles will drive on is also being thickened. Usually, a road has about two inches of asphalt, but for Healy Spur Road, the DOT is making that layer three inches, adding an inch.
