Truck driver Robert Ireland turned to drugs and once stayed awake for 13 days to try to make a living. The industry has reached rare unity in support of new laws to set minimum conditions for drivers, though consumers may end up paying more.
Truckies admit the Albanese government’s proposed powers to set owner-driver minimum pay and conditions up the supply chain will lift costs for consumers but insist it will be a small price to pay for safe and sustainable work in the industry.
“We’re not asking for anything unreasonable. All we’re asking is for the framework that allows for cost recovery.” TWU national secretary Michael Kaine argued the bill must specify powers to set requirements up the supply chain, such as fair payment times, rather than leave it to ministerial regulation.
However, Australian Trucking Association chief executive Mathew Monro said, while ATA broadly backed the panel, several members remained concerned work would be lost if minimum freight rates were set.
