Belgium's victory over Chile in the Davis Cup second-round qualifying tie was marred by a controversial incident where Belgian player Zizou Bergs accidentally injured his opponent Cristian Garin during a celebration. The incident sparked debate and accusations of unfair play, ultimately leading to Chile's loss despite Garin's inability to continue.

Belgium has secured its spot against Australia in the Davis Cup, but the victory came under bizarre and controversial circumstances. During the second-round qualifying tie against Chile in Hasselt, Belgium's Zizou Bergs accidentally collided with Chilean opponent Cristian Garin while celebrating a crucial break of serve. As Bergs sprinted towards his bench, he inadvertently knocked Garin to the ground, catching him in the eye with his shoulder.

The incident occurred in the narrow space between the net and the umpire's chair. Bergs immediately apologized, but Garin required medical attention for his swollen eye and subsequently refused to continue the match. The Chilean team demanded Bergs' disqualification. However, while Bergs received a warning for unsportsmanlike conduct, Garin was penalized with three consecutive time violations for not restarting the match. This resulted in a game penalty, causing Chile to lose the set, the match (6-3, 4-6, 7-5), and the tie 3-1. Garin, reported by Chile's team doctor to be unable to continue, reportedly confronted umpire Carlos Ramos, stating, 'If you are not going to default him, default me! You don't have the guts to do it to me!' There may be further consequences arising from the incident. Had Bergs been disqualified, as Chile desired, the tie would have proceeded to a deciding match featuring their star player Nicolas Jarry against Belgian teenager Alexander Blockx. Instead, Belgium advances to face Australia in September. Australia, led by Lleyton Hewitt and bolstered by world No.8 Alex de Minaur, had previously defeated Sweden 3-1 in Stockholm. This will be Australia's first home tie in the Davis Cup in three years. The Australians are heavy favorites against a Belgian team spearheaded by Bergs (world No.60) and promising 19-year-old Blockx (No.146).
