Controversy has erupted in South Korea over how to mourn Seoul's self-described 'feminist' Mayor Park Won-soon, who reportedly died by suicide last week after being accused of sexual harassment.
Police said there was no sign of homicide when Mr Park's body was discovered but they have refused to disclose the exact cause of his death."I feel sorry to everyone. I thank everyone who has been with me in my life," the note shown on TV said. Some critics have questioned the image of a man who had portrayed himself as "a feminist mayor" dedicated to gender equality and a vocal supporter of the "#MeToo" movement.
As mayor, he appointed a special adviser on gender equality issues and introduced policies aimed at designing safer urban environments for women and providing affordable housing for working single women. "I think Park did something wrong. It's also regrettable for anyone in public service to be embroiled in such an allegation regardless of whether it's true or not," said Lee Ji-hye, a resident near Seoul.
The Korea Times on Sunday reported that Kim Chong-in, caretaker leader of the country's main opposition United Future Party, had postponed plans to pay a condolence visit to Mr Park's family.
