Coogee Beach in Western Australia has been closed to the public after hundreds of dead fish were discovered in the water. Authorities are investigating the cause of the fish kill and warning beachgoers to avoid swimming as the water may contain high levels of bacteria.
Coogee Beach has been closed due to hundreds of dead fish which have appeared in the water. Beachgoers have been told not to swim in the stretch of ocean between Woodman Point Ammo Jetty and snorkelling hotspot Omeo Wreck where dead scaley mackerel are in the water. Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development officers are investigating at the scene and warn the fish have started washing up on Coogee Beach . DPIRD warned the fish could also start appearing on other beaches.
Beachgoers are being told being in the water could expose them to “high levels of bacteria” and a strong smell. But the Conservation Council of WA claims people were seen swimming and on the beach hours after the beach was closed. CCWA has called for an investigation into the emergency response, saying only a “handful” of “beach closed” signs were put up at “irregular intervals” on the sand. “Without any clear explanation of the risks at the site people were clearly not put off by the signage, with dozens of people still swimming and fishing at the beach on Thursday afternoon and Friday morning,” campaign director Mia Pepper said. “This is cause for a rethink and review of the emergency response to fish kill incidents, which are akin to a canary in the coalmine. We need a comprehensive assessment to get to the bottom of what happened, and for the results to be made publicly available.” DPIRD has been contacted for further comment. DPIRD has told fishers not to collect or eat fish from the area or collect bait, which could have high levels of bacteria. Pet owners are also being urged to keep their animals away from the dead fish

Albanese Criticizes Beach Cabana Trend, Says It Breaches Australian Beach EqualityAustralian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has sparked debate by criticizing the use of beach cabanas, stating that reserving prime spots undermines the principle of shared access to Australia's beaches. Albanese argues that cabanas create an unequal beach environment, contrasting it with the notion that every Australian has equal claim to the country's shores. This statement follows growing criticism on social media regarding the practice of beachgoers setting up cabanas, leaving them unattended, and returning later in the day.
