A lengthy clean-up process is still underway at Coogee Beach in Sydney ’s east following the discovery of mysterious, black, ball-shaped debris. Randwick Council asked beachgoers to avoid the area “until further notice” after council lifeguards discovered the dark spheres along the length of the beach on Tuesday afternoon. The spheres are believed to be “tar balls”, which are formed when oil comes into contact with debris and water, typically the result of oil spills or seepage.

Randwick City Council Mayor Dylan Parker told 7NEWS council crews worked Tuesday night and early Wednesday morning combing through the beach looking for the black balls. “We’re also consulting with the NSW Environmental Protection Agency as well as occupational hygienists to make sure that the beach is clean and safe,” he said. Parker added it was “quite bizarre” that the balls had washed up on Coogee Beach.
