Fresh Cooper injury sours courageous Wallabies win in Mendoza | iainpayten

, the long-term loss of Quade Cooper to a ruptured Achilles was another gut-punch. The injury could even place Cooper’s availability for the 2023 Rugby World Cup in doubt.

Stand-in skipper James Slipper said the Wallabies’ win was one of his favourites, and one of the big motivations was to put in a performance to honour Hooper. In a stop-start clash dominated by the whistle of referee Mike Adamson, the Wallabies turned to their rolling maul to do the damage, scoring three of their five tries with the Brumbies-inspired weapon.

They escaped that time but Pablo Matera didn’t take much longer to open the scoring, when he took a nice inside ball from about 10 metres out and beat the cover defence of Allan Ala’alatoa to score first points in the fifth minute.
