Tasmania Police have not yet confirmed whether a jumping castle that was lifted into the air during a wind event at a Tasmanian school was tied down after five children tragically lost their lives.

Several children fell from a height of 10 metres when the jumping castle was blown into the air by a large gust of wind during end-of-year celebration at Hillcrest Primary School on Thursday morning.

Floral tributes are seen at Hillcrest Primary school in Devonport following the tragedy. Picture: Grant Viney Commissioner Hine was also asked whether the children who were injured in the incident were inside the jumping castle."It is fair to say that those injured were inside the castle. Police understand there were close to 40 Year 5 and 6 students taking part in the end-of-term celebrations when the tragedy occurred.

Premier Peter Gutwein described the incident as"devastating, heartbreaking" and"simply incomprehensible".
