Coraline's Other Mother has been brought to life in a chilling new cosplay. The 2009 stop-motion animated movie, which became the third highest-grossing stop-motion feature of all time when it came out, is based on the 2002 novella of the same name by Neil Gaiman.
SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT This weekend, Twitter user Lenny shared an image of a cosplay bringing the Other Mother from the Neil Gaiman adaptation to life, complete with button eyes and a cracked face. The image is accompanied by a caption that evokes the Other Mother's dialogue from the movie, including telling her daughter Coraline to "count all of the doors and windows." The image was eventually retweeted by Neil Gaiman himself.
Why Coraline is So Terrifying There are a lot of factors that went into making characters like the Other Mother and the environment she inhabits so creepy. For one thing, Gaiman is known for imbuing his fantasy works with darker and more intense elements, even in his works that are more explicitly for children. Gaiman's imagination provided the foundation for Coraline's unsettling atmosphere.
Even more suited to bring this work to life was director Henry Selick, whose previous credits include the Tim Burton-produced classic The Nightmare Before Christmas. The twisted children's book aesthetic is something that Selick perfected in that movie, blending the family-friendly and the terrifying into one potent mix. His most recent project, Netflix's Wendell & Wild shows that his instincts for this kind of design haven't lost their sharpness since Coraline premiered either.
