Auslan interpreters say they have long been a part of the big moments in history, but they are relishing the newfound respect for their roles as lifelines to the deaf community.
Between the bushfires and the coronavirus crisis, Australia's leaders have appeared on television screens and social media feeds with stunning regularity.
Mandy Dolejsi is the only Auslan interpreter in the ACT with the qualifications needed to work in emergency broadcast.Ms Dolejsi has been doing the job officially for 38 years, but has been involved in the deaf community a lot longer."I started signing at a time when the phrase 'sign language interpreter' didn't even exist.
