American voters say coronavirus is a top issue when it comes to whether to re-elect Donald Trump. But the vast majority of Americans used partisanship to form beliefs about coronavirus in the first place.

on how they vote: healthcare, the economy and the pandemic.

Political researchers like Shana Gadarian of Syracuse University acted fast to quantify sentiment in real-time. And given the current American cultural landscape, all the sources of partisan information "just serve to reinforce each other," Dr Gadarian explained. Danville contains nine stoplights and one high school, whose mascot, the "Ironman", pays homage to the town's defunct iron manufacturing power. Old railroad lines and a winding river define Danville's geography. But in one key way, Danville is unique. It's home to the massive Geisinger Medical Centre, which employs more than 10,000 in a town of roughly 4,600, making it among the highest population of healthcare workers per capita in the US.

At the time of writing, Danville and the surrounding county had recorded 160 cases and five deaths in total, an above-average result by any measure. The thing about coronavirus is that the best news is no news. It's the absence of case numbers and death that mark a successful response.analysis by the New York Times showed how partisan identity changes subtlyJust like knowing a doctor gives Americans someone other than politicians to trust, watching someone die has a way of causing you to step back and reconsider a perspective you've held on to for so long.Danville's ability to stop infections hasn't been without consequences.
