Police have made their first arrest of a person allegedly attempting to cross the border without a valid reason for exemption.
This morning Premier Daniel Andrews was questioned by Hamish McDonald onabout the role security firms at quarantine hotels have played in the latest coronavirus outbreak in Victoria. The surge in cases has been linked to slip-ups and inappropriate practices among security guards at the hotels housing returned overseas travellers in quarantine. Due to failings in the system, there have been outbreaks at the Rydges on Swanston and the Stamford Plaza.
Mr Andrews: Corrections Victoria, so the people who run our prisons, they've got oversight, management – the chain of command is very clear and the Corrections Commissioner is doing a fantastic job. We're not taking any overseas flights at this point – that may well be extended as we focus on dealing with outbreaks, cases, testing, tracing and again getting us to a point before we can drive those numbers down.
McDonald: I just need to push you though for a clear answer about whether those companies are still engaged. I know you say the individuals have been removed - it's a question about those organisations. Contacting tracing is underway after a staff member at the Doutta Galla Lynch’s Bridge site aged care home in Kensington tested positive.
Meanwhile, a staff member who worked at the Uniting AgeWell facility in Preston has also tested positive for the virus, along with an employee at BaptCare Karana age care facility in Kew, who tested positive, but did not work while infectious.
