A coronavirus cluster has emerged at a Victorian meat processing facility where eight workers have contracted the virus. Queenslanders and NSW residents are waking up to new freedoms today, with some social distancing restrictions eased.
Prime Minister Scott Morrison says more Australians need to download the COVIDSafe app if they want an early mark on easing national restrictions. The AFL believes it is on target to return in late June, with clubs set to receive a roadmap on how the competition might resume at a briefing today. The global death toll from coronavirus has passed 234,000. There are more than 3.2 million known cases of infection, but more than 1 million people have now recovered, according to the Johns Hopkins University tally.The Health Minister would not be drawn on the difference between federal and Victorian approaches to social distancing restrictions, especially in relation to schools. "My conscience is clear that we have done everything possible to keep Victorians safe," Jenny Mikakos said at her press conference this morning, which has just wrapped up.Harsh restrictions on social gatherings and movement are beginning to ease across some states this weekend. But Victoria is not expected to relax its measures before May 11. When asked about this, Ms Mikakos said Queensland's community transmission rate was 4 per cent, while in Victoria it was 10 per cent.New mobile testing sites open in MelbourneEight new mobile testing centres have opened in Melbourne shopping centres today. The new testing centres are at Box Hill Central, Eastland, Greensborough Plaza, Stockland Point Cook, The Glen, Victoria Gardens, Westfield Southland and Westfield Knox. Health Minister Jenny Mikakos said 35,000 people have been tested for COVID-19 since the state government launched its ambitious testing blitz on Monday with the aim of screening 100,000 people by the end of next week. "More than 5500 tests [were] processed yesterday, bringing the total number of tests to 129,000," Ms Mikakos said. She urged more people to come forward for testing. "Typically it takes about 24 hours to get a test result," she said. People who go to a free mobile testing clinic should take their Medicare card, or another form of ID with them, Ms Mikakos said.Your GP can test you for COVID-19, though you must call ahead. Your GP will either test you on site or refer you to other local testing services, such as a local pathology collection centre.The Alfred Hospital
