The state of New York has recorded its highest daily death toll during the coronavirus crisis, with 731 new fatalities. 'The pain is increasing, the grief is increasing,' Governor Andrew Cuomo said. Follow our live coverage here:

The global death toll from coronavirus has passed 76,000. There are more than 1.

The state is the epicentre of the outbreak in the United States, which has recorded 360,000 cases of infection. Although the rate of hospitalisations appears to be plateauing in New York, the city's hospitals are so overwhelmed, the US Navy hospital ship Comfort has been converted into a 500-bed temporary hospital to treat coronavirus patients.

The US Navy hospital ship "Comfort" passes in front of the Statue of Liberty as it arrives in New York.Comfort was originally intended to serve as a 1000-bed floating hospital for non-COVID-19 patients but because life in Manhattan has effectively ground to a halt, Cuomo said there were relatively few non-coronavirus cases presenting at hospitals.to allow Comfort's medical crew to treat coronavirus patients instead and that the US President readily agreed.

Cuomo said the clearest way out of the lockdown and "getting back to life" was with mass testing. He said the state would begin trialling anti-body tests, subject to federal FDA approval. But the Governor said testing capacity was currently about 50,000 and said the state would invest in private companies who were able to rapidly scale up testing.
