NSW has recorded its tenth consecutive day without a recent locally acquired COVID-19 case. The state's case total increased by one on Monday, after a returned overseas traveller in hotel quarantine tested positive. Follow our coronavirus coverage here:

There were just 4789 tests recorded in the latest 24-hour reporting period. NSW Health's Dr Stephen Corbett said low testing numbers were "still a concern" in the state.

Victorian Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton said health authorities have pounced on the new case but flagged it may end up being a false positive."The result has a high CT value. A high CT value can sometimes mean a weak positive. So we're treating it as a positive. It may end up being a negative," he said."There will be a formal test that goes to our reference laboratory in Melbourne. The close contacts have been tested.

He also has a warning to parents: "This is pick-up and drop-off. It's not dropping off the kids and having a chat at the school gate, as much as you would like to.10.55amEveryone at Victorian high schools will wear a mask when students return to their classrooms. Year 7 students will return to school next Monday, October 12. Years 8-10 will return from Monday, October 26.The staggered return is designed to manage movement across the community as Melbourne moves further out of stage four lockdown restrictions.

"That is an incredibly important test because it moderates student VCE scores. It is incredibly important every year, but particularly this year. I can also inform you that there are no schools closed, so we've got a clear run at the GAT, and that will occur on Wednesday."
