Melbourne's lockdown has been extended by at least another two weeks as Premier Daniel Andrews said 'steady and safe steps' need to be taken

Premier Daniel Andrews has criticised the idea that restrictions should be eased because COVID-19 is only killing the elderly who do not have long to live.

He said people having strokes, premature babies, heart attacks and other urgent health issues could receive diminished care if hospitals were overrun. “I haven't seen her since Christmas. Like lots of other families, no special pleadings from me, I'm just using this as an example, but between the bushfires and this - I have not seen her since then.

“What I am doing is I am asking people, in recognition of the challenge, and the difficulty and the great sacrifice that people who live alone, the great contribution that they have made to this point, I am asking them to follow these rules. “The same thing will apply when we moved to family or household bubble so that you can link up with one other family, your household good,” he said.

For example, he said the state could move into the next phase of re-opening even if an outbreak occurred on the 13th day of a 14-day phase when daily cases were zero.
