A coronial inquest into the death of a 29-year-old prisoner in a WA facility raises concerns about addiction treatment in prisons, as a researcher says the true scale of overdoses is unknown.

An inmate at the Albany Regional Prison died in 2022 after inhaling gas from a can of canola oil .A coroner's report has found Robert Fredrick Parnell died after inhaling butane and propane gas from a can of canola oil spray at Albany Regional Prison.

The man, who the ABC is not identifying for privacy reasons, required urgent medical attention and was taken to Rockingham Hospital where he remains in a coma. Relatives of a prisoner say Corrective Services failed to promptly tell them he had fallen into a coma after a suspected drug overdose at a Western Australian jail.

However, addiction psychiatrist and associate professor at the Rural Clinical School of WA Mathew Coleman said simply removing temptation from the path of those with substance abuse was a short-sighted approach.
