For more than two years, Shane Tapp's family has pushed for more information surrounding his death by the Katherine River in the Northern Territory.
The family of a father who was found dead by a riverbank in a regional Northern Territory town hopes a coronial inquest, starting today, will finally bring some answers.
Speaking ahead of the inquest, Mr Tapp's aunt Toni Tapp-Coutts said the family was hoping for "justice and accountability"."The police did not do a proper job from the beginning and there needs to be answers to that," she said. This week in Katherine Local Court, the NT Coroner will examine matters relating to the evidence and the "appropriateness" of NT Police's investigation into Mr Tapp's death.A forensic pathologist's examination found the possibility of "trauma, especially blunt force trauma," could not be ruled out as the cause of Mr Tapp's death, but neither could drowning, nor a death associated with long-term drug use.
