Cost of evacuation routes in Sydney’s flood-prone north-west to top $900m | Mattonews Rabe9

The NSW government estimates the cost of road improvements in Sydney’s north-west to ensure evacuation routes for tens of thousands of residents in a worst-case flood will top $900 million.

Greens MP David Shoebridge questioned what the government was doing to solve the evacuation problems raised by Infrastructure NSW in 2017. The agency’s 2017 report identified a litany of road infrastructure shortfalls in the area, which would lead to bottlenecks if locals attempted to escape during extreme flooding. The report warned that the valley’s undulating topography meant many key evacuation routes would become flooded at low points before urban centres such as McGraths Hill, Windsor and Richmond were inundated, turning them into “flood islands”.

“It’s about fixing a large number of roads and obviously that needs to go through the appropriate processes because it’s a significant investment.”
