As the NSW government inquires into the loneliness crisis, this man would like to see community groups empowered to connect people.
When Daniel Chin's mental health worsened, he started withdrawing from his friends and family."It hit a point where I said no-one else is going to do this for me," Mr Chin said.So, in 2019, the 39-year-old and his friend Lachlan Stevens launched the Barstool Brothers, a charity whose purpose is to aid in the relief of mental illness.The group encouraged men to meet at a burger bar and have a chat. The first event attracted 30 people, and the next month, 70.
It also identified the economic burden of loneliness on Australia's healthcare system as an estimated $2.7 billion annually, with related mental health issues costing up to $60 billion each year. Dr Ingram said the data was published by the Mental Health Commissioner which had been captured through UCLA loneliness scale that asks questions about companionship and how often people feel lonely."Research has also identified times of life transition including young people leaving home, retirement, migration or becoming a parent, as risk factors," Dr Ingram said.
