The only upside Albanese could find was that he contracted COVID-19 now, and not closer to election day.
After a poor start to the campaign, Albanese had dealt himself back into contention with a solid performance at Wednesday night’s leadership debate which he was adjudged to have won narrowly.In a series of proof-of-life television interviews on Friday, his first of seven days of home isolation, Albanese was clearly frustrated. The only upside he could find was that he contracted COVID-19 now, and not closer to election day.
As Albanese recovers, Labor says the setback is at least an opportunity to showcase the rest of the “team”. Flying squads of frontbenchers will fan out across the land to spread the message until the leader is back on deck.
While it was not surprising that Albanese finally came down with the virus that hit Scott Morrison in March, Labor seemed surprisingly unprepared. When Albanese appeared on TV on Friday, he looked like he was sitting on the dunny talking to his iPhone.
