Author Candice Fox has written numerous bestselling novels. And while many people think they have a book in them, it's not as easy as she makes it look. Here she shares her tips on how to write a crime novel.

Australian crime fiction is in its golden era, and many people think they could be part of it. So what about you? Candice Fox talks with Michaela Kalowski about creating characters who readers care about and how, for her, writing crime brings order to chaos. You've always thought of writing a novel – maybe in retirement, or when you take that big redundancy.

But most likely you'll be putting this together in tiny moments before and after work, on the train or when the baby's napping. thing sounds easy at the outset, but there's a reason there are so many of those. It's because they're all different. 'Small Town: Big Secrets' is a genre unto itself within Australian crime fiction, containing everything from mass shootings to missing toddlers, diamond heists to hostage crises.

How will you get these people to speak to you? Approach them respectfully and professionally, for starters. Never record them or ask them to write anything down. Start with a small commitment – say, half an hour over afternoon tea. In fact, never fail to make food a part of the deal.My latest novel Devil's Kitchen took me to New York, where I hassled firefighters for days so I could write about a fire crew conducting heists. I have also sat on death row with a serial killer.

And you're doing your level best to ignore all the overnight success stories. Because those happen, sure. But hardly ever. Even if you have the best life stories to tell, you'll need to endure the fact that a lot of your library talks will be attended by people who are just there for the free jam pikelets.
